Travel: the wonder of it all. Around every corner, over every hill, the past collides with the future in the here and now. Some photos I take for the record (a journal or travelogue), some for making prints and some for future digital manipulation projects.
Although some of these images were shot on film (notably the Cuba photos) most were taken with a variety of digital cameras. Having carried about 30 rolls of film to Cuba (10 of which were stolen from my checked baggage) I now appreciate the ease of digital photography for travel. In one carry-on bag go cameras, accessories and a laptop. After sorting and cataloging the images each day I select the few choice images from the many taken. My shooting techniques vary but a favourite is to strap his camera to my wrist so I can either shoot from the hip or whip it up to my face quickly to capture an image. Or I'll approach someone, ask if I may take their photo (sometimes I'll have a written translation) and later either email the photo to them or make a print and deliver it. I don't want to be an 'Ugly Tourist', stealing a bit of someone's light.
Travel is a great teacher. Learning about, and respecting, other cultures. Learning how to communicate, especially when asking to take a photo. As I follow my path the inner and outer scene is constantly changing. But it's also very much about being in the here and now. Perhaps some of these images express that.
Happy Trails !!!
